Some diamonds glow under blacklight? How come?

Postby xphiletc on Wed Mar 26, 2008 10:25 am

Some of my diamonds glow under blacklight and some do not. My ring is from a reputable store. Why does this happen?

There's a good chance that stones that glow white have fluorescence. It doesn't mean there's anything wrong with the stone. It happens naturally. And in some colors, fluorescence can actually enhance a stone's ability to face up whiter in many lighting situations.

There are methods which jewelers use to compare LW and SW UV and find if a gem is real or fake (diamond or cubic zirconia).

Some diamonds fluoresce. It’s best to shine a UV light on a cluster ring, so that you have the best chance of seeing the biggest variety of natural fluorescence.

Diamonds and Cubic Zirconia are two different things.

According to standards of color grading, fluorescence is NOT a beneficial characteristic. If anything, it can make a diamond appear to be slightly higher color than it really is. Another one of the stories told about diamonds that they appear nicer in real sunlight, like rubies do.
