One can safely travel with jewelry but must be careful in choosing the jewelry to take on each trip. The rule of thumb is that you choose the jewelry first then pack the clothes that best match the chosen jewelry. This ensures that you minimize the number of jewelry designs that you carry with you on a trip.
When packing the jewelry, place each item in a small suede (or faux suede) drawstring pouch. Never put two or more jewelry pieces in the same pouch - the pieces will leave scratch marks on each other! Place each pouch in a larger suede drawstring bag with pockets to hold the pouches. The suede protects the jewelry and the malleable pouch is easy to pack.
Because diamonds are so much harder than pearls or colored stones, the former will often scratch up or damage the latter and it is usually best to store jewelry pieces inlaid with both diamonds and colored stones/pearls in the boxes that they came with. A jeweler's box will hold the piece in place so the stones don't rub against one other.
When traveling, jewelry cleaning is quite easy and quick. The time-tested method is to dip the jewelry piece for about 5 minutes in lukewarm and slightly soapy water (using regular hotel bar soap), rinse it in lukewarm water, and then dry it out with a suede, faux suede, or chamois cloth. Of course, it goes without saying that the piece should be cleaned carefully and gently, as one would clean a delicate work of art.
