How to Wear and Maintain Pearls Safely

Postby maddy26 on Wed Jun 30, 2010 8:53 pm

Pearls are rather delicate, and should be worn, stored, and cleaned with care. Here are a few tips on how to wear and maintain your pearls safely:

· After you have worn your pearl necklace, ring , earrings, or bracelet, you should gently wipe each pearl with a very soft cloth or a chamois. The cloth can be a bit wet or even dry. You can also dampen it wit a bit of olive oil. The reason for this is to remove any dirt or perspiration (which has acid in it) from literally eating away at the finish on your pearls.

· If the pearls have been allowed to get very dirty, there are special pearl cleaners that you can get from your jeweler that safe to use to get the dirt out from the holes in the pearls that are used for stringing and mounting. After cleaning, allow them to dry on a towel thoroughly before storing them.

· If you wear them frequently, have the jeweler check the mounting and the stringing once or twice a year and replace it if it is looking too worn.

· Never use detergents, bleaches, ammonia, baking soda, steam, ultrasound, toothbrushes, or any abrasive to clean your pearls.

Pearl necklace in a span of two years should be inspected by a jeweler on a consistent basis if they are worn. In danger of fraying thread and if it should be restrung pearls does not. Silk thread to make necklaces and pearls knotted on thread so the beads will not fall all over used if the thread breaks. Necklaces that are worn just for special occasions restringing and one that often is worn a bit without going over the two year period can usually be in good condition is for each one.

The most valuable pearls occur in the wild, but they are very rare. Cultured or farmed pearls from pearl oysters make up the majority of those that are currently sold. Pearls from the sea are valued more highly than freshwater pearls. Imitation or fake pearls are also widely sold in inexpensive jewelry.

How interesting hearing the various beliefs about pearls. Growing up in Connecticut pearls were basically second nature. I think they were the first jewelry I ever owned. I love wearing them, guess it's the preppy in me coming out. That and a Lacoste shirt with the collar turned up.
