Wedding band cleaning...

Postby Chinabear008 on Wed Mar 26, 2008 4:29 pm

My husband and I both have wedding bands that are 10K white gold but both are starting to yellow. I would appreciate any help on how I can bring these back to their original glory! THANK!!!

You HAVE To get it recoated.
White gold is basically just paint on yellow gold.
They charge $50 every 2 years.
Or you can buy a plan

Mine came with a lifetime warranty, and as long as I take my ring in every 6 months for them to clean it they take care of everything, check with the jeweler that you purchased them from.

I have noticed the yellowish color some diamonds What do they exactly mean. And does the value go down?

Thanks all! I didn't know I could have them recoated. Maybe when I do I should have them recoat with 14K or 18K white gold. I have a 14K ring that I wear just as often and it is just as shiny as when I first got it. Should I just invest in platinum bands? I heard they scratch easily though... and of course there is sentimental value to these bands as they were the ones we exchanged on our wedding day... =)

If you go to the local jewelry they will steam clean it for you. I could not believe the difference from my cleaning to theirs

White gold is not coated yellow gold, actually. It's an alloy of gold and a white metal, such as nickel or zinc. Sometimes a white gold item is rhodium plated, but not always. You'll need to ask a jeweler about whether or not yours are. If so, you'll probably just want to have the same type of plating. If you really want 14 or 18K rings you're better off buying new ones. All plating does is give you a 14k plated ring, not a 14k ring.

There's a post in this section with a recipe for homemade jewelry cleaner. That should work just fine on your rings. If not, take them to a jewelry store and ask to have them cleaned. Most will do this for free while you browse or charge just a small fee.

I'll try the recipe and see if it works. Otherwise, hubby says he'll concede to buying new rings! Anyone know much about Tungsten? He likes it because it has a gunmetal look but I don't know how durable it is compared to other metals... thanks!
