eBay

Postby Plum on Wed Mar 26, 2008 12:10 pm

I tend to buy antique and vintage jewelry and I've had wonderful luck on eBay. You do have to have some knowledge, because you get the best buys from sellers who don't. I look for someone who might have gotten a few pieces of jewelry in a lot of something else and just wants to get rid of the jewelry so he can concentrate on the something that's his specialty. Also, new sellers looking to build up feedback sometimes offer excellent bargains.

I've had almost everything I've bought on eBay either appraised or at least eyeballed by a reputable jeweler. Everything I've bought that I knew was fine jewelry turned out to be worth much more than I paid for it. For me, sitting at my computer and finding a piece I love beats running all over the place trying to track down something at an antique store or house sale.

The worst experience I've had was at an anchor store jewelry counter at the local mall. This was back before I'd done much research and I had no idea how much things cost. The piece was beautiful but very, very overpriced. I don't even bother with department store jewelry areas any more.

I have purchased two different pieces of Tiffany jewelry on Ebay and have been very pleased. Be wary of things that are too good to be true, use paypal (buyer protection) and have fun!

What are some suggestions on if you wanted to buy something on eBay to make sure that the jewelry is authentic?

ALWAYS look at the users rating...try to buy from people with a rating at least 99% or higher and have at least around 100 transactions...especially if buying an expensive stone. Also, check through their feedback to see what other kinds of items the selling has been selling. If he has sold 100 auto parts or sporting equipment items (for example) and this one piece of jewelry, he likely doesn't have much idea what he's selling...only what he was told when he bought it.
And as mentioned above, ALWAYS use Paypal buyer protection or pay via Credit Card that will give you some sort of buyer protection.
Lastly...just go with your gut. As they say, your first instict is usually the right one. Don't let the brilliant shine from the stone blind you from the reality of what you might actually be purchasing...junk.

I don't refer to buy on ebay since there are a lot of fault on seller in ebay. I recommend if you want buy real, go with the jewelry store because you can check or exchange or complain when they give you unreal value but if you buy on ebay you would not know who the seller and they are not garrantee to give you money back.

Ebay is a good place for buying casual swarvoski jewelry.

I've bought from QVC before without any issues and wouldn't be afraid to buy from ebay. Like others have posted look at their rating, that will help you determine from whom to buy from. I've bought a few expensive products off ebay without any issues I don't see why ebay would be any different as long you as you are smart about it.

I believe I read somewhere that something like 75-85% of Tiffany jewelry on e-bay is fake so I'd be very wary of buying that.

I do think if you know what you are doing buying antique jewelry could be a good idea. I'd like to learn more about it, so if anyone can point me towards some resources I'd be appreciative.

I'd imagine you can get some real steals on eBay, but when it comes to jewerly I doubt I'll ever chance it. Hell, I barely buy CDs on eBay because sometimes they come without the jewel case and booklet. eBay is a great tool in some instances, but in some you can really get screwed.
