Diamond Detector

When I took my diamond ring into the jewelry store to get resized, they used a pen-shaped item that blinked red when touching a diamond. Has anybody seen this or know how it works? I don't know what it's called and my internet searches come up nil. Thanks in advance for the info :)

I love amethysts and garnets in the winter time! The deep, rich colors cheer me up on those especially gray days.
