I've tried it before and had no problems although my friends keep telling me I should stop doing it as some rings can have a weird reaction to this method.

I would have to agree... I've had a few friends purchase from Amazon.com and they have had zero problems. I myself haven't tried them yet, but likely will be in the coming months.
I would think it would be very difficult to judge the quality of the diamonds online simply from looking at pictures. Although I will give it a second thought and do some more research since some of you have not had any problems with it.
