How to tell if jewelry is solid and not plated

Postby silverdude1 on Wed Apr 15, 2009 4:55 pm

I have 2 Sterling Silver necklaces, 1 Sterling Silver bracelet, and a Sterling Silver Superman ring. All of them are supposed to be solid SS. They all have the .925 stamp. Is there a way to prove they are solid? I heard that holding a magnet to the jewelry will make the jewelry stick to the magnet if its plated because of the other metals. Will solid SS stick to a magnet? And vice versa, will silver plated jewelry not stick to the magnet. Is there any other tests to prove its authenticity?

Thanks!
